InDesign and layout trials

NME Magazine Cover ( InDesign )

Final work

The task was to create an almost duplicate copy of the original NME magazine cover using InDesign. First of all I use Dafont to find the different fonts I would need later on when I started piecing it together. I downloaded the original NME magazine cover from the AS Graphics course blog and imported it into InDesign. I then set the page as a double spread so that I could make a almost duplicate copy matching the fonts and imagery as closely possible to the original. Part of this process was to choose four boys as models to recreate the pose and photoshop them into my own cover. I then had to use InDesign to put together the different parts that made up the whole cover. I enjoyed this task because I learnt to use a different design program which taught me what's involved in creating professional magazine covers and the tricks you can use!

Magazine Analysis

The magazine analysis is really important as it shows me how a magazine is set out. It was really interesting to unpick the magazine.

Photoshop Blending Modes

Work - In - Progress

I didn't  enjoy this process as it was tricky as well. I think I struggled as it was a  bit  complex.

Cut 'n' Paste Poetry

Working Progress

I  planed this in two steps. The first step was to actually form the sentences out of paper. The second step was to edit these in photoshop. I enjoyed the second step a lot more than the first step.

John Porcellino

We did a fanzine in the style of John Porcellino. The objective was to teach us how to improve our work and that ordinary everyday stuff is interesting and poignant or funny because it is all part of life experiences.  Fanzines are just made for the fun of it  rather than printed in large volumes for profit. John Porcellino is  this guy who created the King Kat  zines which are so COOL. He started quite young and as he got older his strips became more defined and mature.
Personally I don't think mines very good but other people think it's funny. However I did enjoy creating stories surrounding things that had happened to me. This helped me to understand why people enjoyed makin zines as they can be very addicted.

Colour Workshops

I loved painting the lemons.I had to get the tone as close as possible to the original colour. I used traditional way of doing a picture. It also taught me new techniques and helped me improve my old techniques. Painting the lemons upside down is an example of a new technique that i learnt. Personally I found this task difficult as I couldn't get the colours exact. I just had to get it close.

I learnt how to mix colours using the primary colours. For example blue and yellow makes green. We learnt about tone and complimentary colours. Complimentary colours are across the wheel. This can effect the colours you make. Tone can change the way you look at an image. I also learnt that it was best to start with lighter colours and go to darker colours.

Unit Evaluation

I  had to create a cut and paste poet and create an illustrated poetry book. We had to use  our imagination and let it run free by producing a creative piece of work free of conscious control. The objective of the task was to show us the importance of the unconscious as a source of inspiration and how it is central to the nature of surrealism.

First I started cutting random but appealing words and half sentences out of magazines with a scalpel. I had to cut out a minimum of 40 in order to give me enough inspiration for my poems. Next I set the words out in front of me and let them take on a life of their own.
After I had started with one appealing phrase I started to look for interesting associations. I allowed room for accidents, mistakes and the bizarre to help guide my thoughts. I then allowed my subconscious to "write" the poem. I had to look for a combination of words and sentences that have a feeling and deep meaning. My aim was to create some poems that were surreal and poigant.
I created 4 surreal poems and  stuck them down on a piece of paper. I  then scanned these into the computer.
After I had scanned them in I read through them and took note of interesting imagery that emerged. I gathered the images off the internet and made them look  like they had been cut out from a magazine. I then used the photoshop template that Mr Haycocks had prepared. This was was used to prepare and "guide" our Cut and Paste poetry.

The final part of the task was to create a folded poetry booklet without staples. This was quite easy to master once I had been shown what to do. Ta da finished surrealist poetry booklet!! I enjoyed letting my imagination run free and not having to reign it in. :) The result was very satisfying!!

Al Zimmer: Perfect!

George Valentin: With pleasure.

Doris: I'm unhappy.
George Valentin: So are millions of us.

George Valentin: Look at what you've become. You've become proud! You've become stupid!

George Valentin: [first lines, heard in one of his films] I won't talk! I won't say a word!

Peppy Miller: Make way for the young!

[sternly, to Peppy]
George Valentin: I've made way for you.

Peppy Miller: [trying to pressure the studio into letting her do a film with George] I won't work anymore. It's him or me.
[Zimmer doesn't say anything]
Peppy Miller: What I mean is, it's him AND me! Or it's neither of us!
[Nobody gets it again]
Peppy Miller: Hey, I'm blackmailing you! Get it?

George Valentin: [talking about Uggie] If only he could talk.

Ballet Shoes

[Miss Jay meets Pauline and Winifred after their Alice auditions]
Miss Jay: Well done, you two. Right, Pauline is to play Alice
[pauses as girls gasp]
Miss Jay: and Winifred is to be engaged as understudy.
Pauline Fossil: [starts to say] What?
Winifred: [interrupts] When I finished my dance, people clapped! Nobody clapped her, there was just silence!
Miss Jay: Dance is important, but Pauline looks right for Alice.
Winifred: She looks right for everything, she always will!
[looks at Pauline and murmurs]
Winifred: Pretty face... blonde hair...
[yells]
Winifred: It's got NOTHING, whatsoever to do with TALENT, and it's SO UNFAIR!
[runs back up the stairs]

Synopses

The Artist

I have discided to do The Artist after falling in love with the film when it came out in 2011. The film is very inspirational as it has lots of iconography. Tap shoes,vodka/alcohol bottles, love hearts and dog bones are all going to be on the poster all carfully cutout in the style of Rob Ryan with my take on his work.I plan to use white card and back it on to red card.I will use the following image on the poster:

I will cut the poster in half  and use the image of them and cut it in a heart shape with lights round it as it represents a hollywood mirror with iconography surrounding it. At the bottom THE ARTIST will look like it is in hollywood lights.I will mainly use traditional skills and photography.
